Sketch Oaxaca with Felix Scheinberger

Join internationally acclaimed illustrator, author, and Berlin-based art professor Felix Scheinberger for a rare sketching workshop in Oaxaca City, Mexico.
This five-day workshop is designed for artists who want to draw on location, loosen up, see more deeply, and build a sketchbook filled with energy and visual stories. Oaxaca is the perfect setting for Felix’s expressive approach to sketching. The city's bold architecture, street life, and markets provide an excellent canvas for storytelling.

Together we'll explore Oaxaca through drawing, from the historic Centro to ancient sites and local markets. Expect lively streets, strong visuals, rich food culture, and a small group experience grounded in the history, culture, and visual energy of the city.

Felix will lead the workshop through his signature approach to expressive illustration, using sketchbooks as tools for observation, experimentation, and storytelling. Meagan Burns will facilitate the daily flow of the workshop, local logistics, and on-the-ground support throughout the week.

This is an opportunity to experience the color and culture of Oaxaca, while learning on location with Felix Scheinberger.

What You'll Learn with Felix

  • sketch with more freedom, energy, and emotional presence

  • loosen perfectionism and develop a more personal drawing voice

  • tell visual stories through architecture, people, atmosphere, and motion

  • work with line, color, and visual interpretation instead of over-controlling the page

  • use your sketchbook as a daily creative companion rather than a place to perform

Felix’s work is known for its intelligence, spontaneity, humor, and humanity. The goal is not perfect drawings. The goal is learning how to see, respond, edit, exaggerate, and bring a place to life on the page.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is for artists, illustrators, urban sketchers, and adventurous drawers who want to work on location and deepen their visual language.

You do not need to draw like Felix in order to benefit from this experience. You do need to be open, curious, and ready to sketch every day.

This workshop is a strong fit for people who:

  • want to loosen up and draw more expressively

  • are interested in sketchbooks, illustration, and visual storytelling

  • enjoy cultural travel and learning through immersion

  • are comfortable working on location in active urban environments

  • are physically able to walk and navigate an urban environment

Workshop Highlights Include

  • an open sketch event with Felix in Oaxaca

  • a welcome dinner with traditional local food

  • daily workshop time with Felix while sketching Oaxaca

  • a historical talk with a local guide while drawing on location

  • a sketch walk through Jalatlaco

  • an excursion to a traditional Zapotec market with a picnic from the mercado

  • a day at Monte Albán Archaeological Site, one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Mexico

Transportation

Oaxaca City (OAX) is normally reached after a connection via Mexico City, a major hub and easily accessible from almost every corner of the world. Upon your arrival at the OAX airport, there is a verified Colectivo stand where you purchase your shared van ride with a verified taxi driver. Our hotel is located less than 30 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic. You can choose a shared ride for approximately $105 pesos, or a private taxi for approximately $400 pesos, paid directly to the Colectivo stand. Both options are safe and economical ways to travel to the hotel. Side note: if several planes arrive at approximately the same time, only shared colectivos are available, unless you pre-arrange a private driver with me beforehand.

If you prefer, we can arrange a private driver to pick you up at the airport and deliver you directly to the hotel for approximately $900 pesos.

Don't forget travel insurance!

Hotel Information

Our home base for the workshop is Hotel Casa de los Frailes, a charming and secure hotel in the heart of Oaxaca Centro, located directly across from the Templo de Santo Domingo.

We have a block of rooms reserved for workshop participants, with rates ranging around $110 per night, on average, including breakfast. Participants who choose to stay at Casa de los Frailes will pay the hotel directly after selecting a room based on availability.

You are also welcome to arrange your own lodging. There are many nearby hotel options, and some guests may prefer a different room style or setup. If you choose to stay elsewhere, we ask that you stay close to Santo Domingo for ease, safety, and smooth access to the workshop, as our days begin early and often run late.
